Alisha Robinson wakes up everyday at 6:30 AM, with the help of her parents and her younger siblings. She stays in her bed for an extra 30 minutes after her alarm until her parents force her to get up and put her feet on the floor. She does her daily morning routine of complaining how exhausted she is due to her sleeping late. Robinson claims it is not her fault it’s due to the school system. She exclaims how majority of the students sleep through first and second period anyway, due to the large amount of work that is being put on them.

This is due to the fact that teenagers are not used to waking up at such vigorous hours. Their biological clock is set back so they sleep late and wake up even later. The hormones in a teenagers brain causes this, and allows teenagers to stay awake those extra hours when they need to finish the last assignments for their classes.

As stated on NJ.com by a trusted professional, “Getting enough sleep is important for students’ health, safety, and academic performance,” said Anne Wheaton, the report’s lead author and an epidemiologist for the CDC. “Early school start times, however, are preventing many adolescents from getting the sleep they need.”

A study done by the Academic College Board shows, that lack of sleep also results in low test scores. They say it is due to students not being able to recall information due to low brain productivity. Thus causing students to fail classes and increase the rate of dropping out. They also say that sleep deprivation results in higher rating of depression, and having a negative aspect on life.
